New Foot Strike Proves Successful
After taking a month off for a knee injury in April, I knew I would need to get back into running slowly. So, I took advantage of that time by experimenting with a new foot strike. After six months with this new method, I am proud to announce that I ran the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon nearly five minutes faster than last year. And the best part about it — the run felt great and I am still pain free. My goal was an 8:00 mile and to finish under 1:45:00. (more…)

Fanny Pack and Funny Socks
It is official. I have registered for the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon on October 16, 2011. Since my training is still going smoothly (with no injuries) I decided to go ahead and commit. I even bought a couple of new items to for my long runs. First, this Fuel Belt will help to keep me hydrated. This replaces the water bottle that I was using before (just too bulky and jiggly). I actually gave the new belt a try this past weekend on my long run (stats below) and it was pretty comfortable.
Also, due to some blisters, I purchased some Injinji toe socks. I’ll let you know how they work out for me (It took me about 3 minutes to try them on — toes are harder to work with than fingers).
Here we go again!

Kent Marshall Launches Exploratory Committee for Possible Run…
I have officially launched an exploratory committee for a possible run in the 2011 Detroit Free Press Half Marathon.
After being sidelined with a knee injury while training for the 2011 Glass City Marathon this past April, I took off a month from running. During my time off I researched the recent trend of barefoot (minimalist) running. I decided to abandon my pronounced heel-strike form and experiment with a forefoot strike. I even bought a pair of Nike Free running shoes that supposedly simulates barefoot running. I won’t lie: it did take some getting used to (sore calves and foot muscles!), so to adjust, I had to limit runs to 2-3 miles for many weeks.
Since that initial trial period I’ve continued with this method and am now toying with the idea of running the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon on October 16. I plan to make a decision within two weeks (before the registration fee goes up another $15). In the meantime, I have started a training program to make sure I am ready if and when my exploratory committee (members: me) thinks a run is feasible.
Stay tuned for an update!
